Medical Surge

The medical surge assessment of non-traditional health-care services and providers within the 10-county Bay Area, including  hospitals, clinics, surgery and dialysis centers, employee health centers and skilled nursing facilities has been completed. Identification of the resources within the non-traditional care facilities will allow the Medical Health and Operation Area Leads to coordinate and possibly redirect medical assets and the surge of patients that will come to traditional care facilities during a disaster. This information may be used to help ensure patients receive timely, appropriate care based on available resources.

The assessment report consists of regionally specific data according to traditional and non-traditional facilities.   Traditional facilities consisted of hospitals based on OSHPED identification. Traditional facilities consisted of Acute Care Hospitals including Specialty Hospitals, Burn Centers, Pediatric Hospitals, Trauma Centers, Critical Access Hospitals, and Community Hospitals. Non-traditional facilities included in this assessment are Surgery Centers, Ambulatory Surgery Centers, Dialysis Centers, Clinics, Blood and Plasma Donation Centers, and Long-Term Care Facilities.

Under separate cover is Appendix B: Facility Directory. This document is divided by county and includes: clinics; hospitals; intermediate care facilities; long term care – nursing homes; pharmacies; plastic surgery clinics; specialty clinics – chronic dialysis centers and surgery centers; and blood banks and phlebotomy.
Appendix C consists of templates used for the capability assessment survey. It is the intent of the Bay Area SUASI to continue having facilities complete the survey and further determine the regions capabilities in determining our gaps and capabilities during a surge event during the 2007 SUASI Grant Period.
Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this assessment, any of its elements, or how it will be integrated into future funding requirements, please do not hesitate to contact Caryn P. Thornburg, Project Manager for the Medical Surge Project. You may contact Caryn via phone: 415-601-3229 or    email: cthornburg@bayareasuasi.org.
